Lil Nas X, the boundary-pushing artist, is stirring up controversy once again with his latest single, “J Christ.” The track, dedicated to a figure with the “greatest comeback of all time,” has sparked outrage among some viewers. Accompanied by a photo of Lil Nas X dressed as Jesus on the cross, the artist’s provocative approach has left sensitive individuals hesitant to engage with the newly-debuted music video.
The music video for “J Christ” takes viewers on a wild journey that further challenges societal norms and religious imagery. The video showcases Lil Nas X being approached by a line of worshippers, including lookalikes of Kanye West and former President Barack Obama. As the video progresses, Lil Nas X descends into the depths of Hell, where he engages in a game of basketball with the devil, who notably sports the artist’s controversial “Satan shoes” collaboration known as the Mschf Air Max 97.
Throughout the video, Lil Nas X shears sheep and dances with his crew, all while a satirical nod to Noah’s ark unfolds with flooding water engulfing the city. The visuals are rich in symbolism and aim to provoke thought and reactions from viewers.
“J Christ” is Lil Nas X’s first release since his 2022 song “Late to da Party” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again, as well as his contribution to the League of Legends World Championship with “Star Walkin’.” His debut album, Montero, made waves in 2021, solidifying his status as a groundbreaking artist unafraid to challenge societal norms.
BUT… some were not happy with this video. In turn, Lil Nas X apologized for it.
With his fearless exploration of religious imagery and societal expectations, Lil Nas X aims to ignite conversations and challenge preconceived notions.
