As the main writer for JUCE, I often get the inside scoop on the latest happenings in the fashion world. But nothing could have prepared me for the excitement in SIR Darryl Neal’s voice when he told me what happened during the recent New York Fashion Week.
“Raya, you won’t believe what went down,” Sir Darryl began, his excitement clearly visible. He’d just come from a meeting at Next Models. NLE Choppa’s not signed to Next Models but what he witnessed there was nothing short of revolutionary.
SIR Darryl told me about a discussion centered on fashion, particularly involving NLE Choppa and his manager, Angeleta Potts.
In true SIR Darryl fashion, he didn’t hold back! He boldly stated during the meeting that the industry lacked a “Male Rihanna” – someone audacious enough to shatter every norm in men’s fashion.
What happened next had SIR Darryl practically giddy with excitement. Choppa, exuding confidence, looked at him and declared, “I can do better.” And according to SIR Darryl, this wasn’t just talk. NLE Choppa has been “bulldozing every expectation of what a rapper in fashion should be!”
But the cherry on top? SIR Darryl couldn’t stop chuckling as he recounted seeing Anna Wintour’s reaction. “When was the last time you saw Anna smiling at anyone?” he asked rhetorically. The significance wasn’t lost on either of us – this was truly a moment for the fashion history books. Anna Wintour. Smiling. Wow.
SIR Darryl made sure to give credit where it was due. He praised the artist’s personal stylist for their outstanding work in curating and collaborating on this achievement. But he reserved special commendation for Angeleta Potts. “People don’t see the BS you have to deal with behind the scenes,” he said, clearly impressed by Potts’ tenacity in never taking no for an answer.
As our conversation was winding down, SIR Darryl’s excitement hadn’t diminished one bit. “Mark my words, Raya,” he said, “there will be a marketing class taught in Angeleta’s name one day!”
Listening to SIR Darryl recount his NYFW experience, I couldn’t help but feel the tremors of change in the fashion world. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love covering this industry. As SIR Darryl so eloquently put it at the end of our call, “This is such a huge moment.” And I, for one, can’t wait to see what comes next.
